School District Weekly Update
WATERSMEET TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT
The week of August 3, 2020 Update
Dear Parents and Students:
1. Re: School Closure Update/Student Belongings Pickup:
Watersmeet Township School District is now on the summer schedule. In the interest of safety, the building will remain locked with only essential personnel in the building to clean, maintain systems, and sanitize the building. Any other entry into the building will be scheduled by appointment only.
Following the July 1st Governor’s Executive Directive, the school district will begin planning for the start of school with students in attendance. At the June 29th school board meeting, the School Board approved the district calendar for the 2020-2021 school year which indicates that the start date for students is on August 25, 2020.
The School Board will be having a Special School Board meeting on August 3, 2020 at 6:30 pm. This meeting is online on “Google Meet” and will be discussing the opening of school on August 25, 2020 for students and staff and how the school year will look with the COVID-19 safety precautions in place to protect the students and staff. If you would like to virtually attend this special School Board meeting you will need to join through:
“Google Meet” at: meet.google.com/hci-vqkg-kws
Or join by phone: ‪(US) +1 402-868-0135‬ PIN: ‪558 945 881‬#
Parents, if you would like to pick up your students belongings from their lockers or classrooms, you may call the school and set up an appointment to come to the school on August 3rd – 6th from 9:30am-1:00pm. When you call, speak with Roxy Williams who will work with you to get you to the proper locker and classroom. Remember, facemasks and gloves are required to enter the building. In the interest of Covid-19 safety for the individuals in the building and the continued need for sanitation of the building, safety protocols will be strictly enforced.
Students are not allowed in the building for any reason per the governor’s Executive Orders. This protocol will be strictly enforced for the safety of everyone in the building! Additionally, no more than 10 adult individuals may be in the building at any one time and continued social distancing is expected by anyone in the building as well as facemasks and gloves.

2. Re: Pickup Site for Food Available For All Students During COVID-19 School Dismissal:
Watersmeet Township School District is working to make sure all children age 18 and under are fed throughout this difficult time. Ready to eat food will be provided during the week of August 3, 2020. This food will be distributed from Watersmeet Township School District on Tuesday, August 4th, from 10:30 am - 1:00 pm. Students will be given seven (7) days of breakfast and lunch food in the package. The meals are available for all children age 18 and under. This food will not require any additional cooking. If you have questions, please contact Mr. George Peterson III at: 906-358-4504.
If you don’t know, the COVID-19 virus has now entered our community and surrounding area (both asymptomatic and symptomatic) and is spreading rapidly throughout Gogebic County now. In conversations with the county health department, the number of cases reported are increasing at a rapid rate each week since the Memorial Day Holiday and July 4th weekends. Local hospitals are working to increase the number of beds available for the expected increase of COVID-19 infected people. We are still in the first wave of this disease and the health officials are expecting higher numbers of ill people to continue for the next few months. Then expect a second wave of the virus.
Please do everything possible to keep yourself and your family safe and healthy! Be smart about how to protect yourself so you aren’t a carrier of the virus to your loved ones. Wear a mask when you are out in public to help prevent the transmission of the virus to yourself and to others and/or become infected from another person transmitting the disease. This is going to take some time but we will get through this extraordinary event together by working together to keep each other and the children safe.
My best wishes and please stay safe,
Dr. Gerald E. Pease
